- About the plant: a slow, neat evergreen tree with glossy narrow leaves in bunches. This is the true cooking star anise, Illicium verum - chakra phool and badian.
- What you get: 1 healthy star anise (Illicium verum) plant, about 1-1.5 feet, rooted in a poly bag without a pot and packed in a ventilated carton for safe delivery.
- The spice: in time it bears star-shaped fruits with 6 to 8 pods, green on the tree and rusty brown when dried - the star you add to biryani, pulao and garam masala.
- Where it grows: a 16 inch or larger pot or the ground, in bright light with some afternoon shade. It likes mild weather and moist, rich, well-drained soil.
- Patience: star anise grows slowly and usually begins fruiting after 5 to 6 years. Until then it is a handsome, glossy evergreen for a terrace or garden.
